Cosplay, Family, and Courtyard Magic

A portrait session where imagination and connection meet.
Naka-Kon 2026 Through My Lens
There’s a completely different kind of energy at Naka-Kon—a little softer, a little more whimsical, and somehow full of both chaos and connection all at once. This year, I went in as a photographer (with camera always ready), but also as a mom, a wife, and a creator—and honestly, it made the whole experience even better.
We set up in the courtyards with something a little fun—my mimic on display. If you know, you know. It definitely caught attention, sparked conversations, and gave people something interactive to stop and enjoy between shoots. Having my husband and kids there with me made it feel less like “work” and more like a shared adventure. They got to see the creativity, the costumes, the people—and I got to capture it all while they were right there beside me.
And the shoots? So good.
I had the chance to photograph a variety of cosplayers across some incredible fandoms—RWBY, One Piece, and Sailor Moon just to name a few.
RWBY came to life right in front of me—Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Jaune Arc all together, fully in character. There’s something about seeing a full team lineup that just works—the dynamics, the energy, the way each character stands and interacts. A group of friends that also cosplay as Sailor Moon characters <3 _<3 Hearts!
Then there was One Piece—Nami with her pole staff, absolutely owning her shots, and Robin in her blue shirt and pink and green skirt bringing that calm, powerful presence she’s known for. Those details matter, and these cosplayers nailed them. She created these pieces and her skill shows. She was able to bring each character to life. It was so fun to capture her in the hotel!
But hands down, one of the most heart-melting moments? Sailor Pluto and Sailor Chibi Moon. A real-life mom and daughter duo, and they were perfect. I absolutely love Sailor Moon! They were so cute together and their friend helped well with switching out props.
The weather definitely tried to fight us—it was cold, no question—but the Sheraton Kansas City Hotel at the Overland Park Convention Center came through with some incredible indoor and semi-sheltered locations. From textured walls to open courtyards to tucked-away corners with just the right lighting, there were so many unique spots to shoot without losing that convention atmosphere.
That mix of environment is what makes Naka-Kon so fun to photograph. You can go from bright, open spaces to moody, dramatic backdrops in just a few steps—and it keeps every shoot feeling different.
We also brought a mimic. We sat it down and cosplayers all around came to look. We found a few Frierens. (anime)
By the end of it, I had a full gallery, a tired body, and a heart that felt incredibly full. Getting to do what I love while my family is right there with me? That’s the kind of balance I’ll take every time.
Already looking forward to next year.
