Ice, Light, and Mountain Magic: Cripple Creek Ice Festival + Ice Castles

Cripple Creek, Colorado • A winter photo day trip full of sparkle, sculptures, and glowing ice

View Full Gallery

Cripple Creek in winter feels like stepping into a snow globe — the kind where you can hear laughter down the street, see ice sculptures catching the sun, and somehow forget you own a never-ending pile of laundry back home.

This trip was all about two things: the Cripple Creek Ice Festival and the Ice Castles experience — a perfect mix of outdoor ice artistry and glowing frozen tunnels.

If you’re a photographer, it’s the best kind of winter subject: texture, reflections, highlights, and color — everywhere.

Cripple Creek Ice Festival: Outdoor Art You Can Photograph All Day

The Ice Festival turns Cripple Creek into an outdoor gallery. Sculptures line the streets while artists carve in real time, which means you can document both the finished work and the creative process.

Ice catches light in a way that feels almost alive — crystal clear from one angle, blue or silver from another. You can shoot the same sculpture ten ways and get ten completely different images.

How I photographed the festival

  • Expose for the ice to protect highlight detail
  • Look for backlight to make edges sparkle
  • Add people for scale so the size reads in photos
  • Capture textures — chisel marks, bubbles, frost
  • Tell a full story with wide, medium, and close shots

And yes — there was plenty of “Stand right there, don’t touch that,” because photographing with kids in winter gear is its own adventure.

Ice Castles: A Glowing Wonderland of Ice

If the festival is an art walk, Ice Castles is pure winter fantasy. You move through towering frozen walls, tunnels, and glowing chambers where the color shifts with the light.

Photography tips inside Ice Castles

  • Use a fast lens for low-light ice scenes
  • Watch shutter speed to avoid motion blur
  • Let the LED color set the mood — don’t overcorrect white balance
  • Try silhouettes for dramatic shapes
  • Keep a microfiber cloth handy for lens fog

Mom Life + Photographer Life

Winter travel with two young kids means layers, snacks, and constant glove checks — but it also means shared memories of walking through glowing ice tunnels together. That balance between documenting and just being present is part of what makes these trips meaningful for me.

If You Go

  • Dress warmer than you think you need
  • Bring spare batteries (cold drains them fast)
  • Carry a lens cloth for fog
  • Plan time for both the festival and Ice Castles
  • Take a few video clips — ice sparkle looks amazing in motion
