Some photo sessions just come together in a way that reminds me exactly why I love what I do. Paty's maternity session was one of those mornings.
This session was a little extra special because it all started with a trade between two creatives. Paty worked her magic installing my new purple locs (which, if you know me, are absolutely me), and in return, I photographed her maternity session. I love supporting other small businesses whenever I can, and collaborations like this are some of my favorites.
We met at Waterfall Park in Merriam, Kansas before sunrise—like, crack of dawn early. The kind of early where you're questioning your life choices until you start seeing that first bit of color creep into the sky.
And it was absolutely worth it.
As we started shooting, the sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon. The light was soft, calm, and almost dreamy. Every few minutes the colors changed, giving us something completely different to work with. By the time we made our way to the waterfall, the sun had climbed to just the right spot, wrapping everything in warm golden light. It couldn't have been timed any better.
Paty brought several beautiful, flowing maternity dresses, and we took full advantage of every location the park had to offer. Even though she's expecting a little boy, the dresses we had available happened to be shades of pink. Instead of letting that limit us, I decided to have a little fun in post-processing. Some images remain their beautiful soft pink, while others have been artistically edited into blue, giving her two completely different looks from the same session. It's a reminder that creativity doesn't stop when the camera clicks.
One of my favorite details from the morning was the gorgeous henna on her belly. Another talented local artist had created an intricate design to celebrate her pregnancy, and there was no way I was going to let that go undocumented. We spent time capturing close-up images of the artwork before moving back into wider portraits. Those little details often become some of the most meaningful photographs years later.
The waterfall itself gave us an entirely different atmosphere. The rushing water, surrounding greenery, and perfect morning light created a peaceful backdrop that made every image feel timeless. Between the flowing dresses, the movement of the water, and the excitement of welcoming a new life into the world, everything just worked together naturally.
Sessions like this remind me that photography isn't just about taking pictures. It's about documenting seasons of life, celebrating milestones, and creating memories with people who trust me to tell their story. Whether it's through a collaboration, a friendship, or simply meeting someone for the first time, every session has its own personality—and this one had plenty of it.
Paty, thank you for trusting me to capture this incredible chapter of your life. And thank you for the amazing purple locs that have quickly become part of my own personality. I can't wait to meet your little boy and watch your family continue to grow.
If you're expecting and have been thinking about documenting your pregnancy, don't wait until the last minute. The best maternity sessions happen when we have time to plan outfits, locations, and create something that feels uniquely you. Whether you dream of waterfalls, golden sunrises, open fields, or something completely different, I'd love to help tell your story.
