Halo ODST Cosplay Photoshoot at Planet Anime KC | Bartle Hall, Kansas City
During Planet Anime KC at Bartle Hall in Kansas City, I had the chance to photograph an epic Halo ODST cosplay photoshoot with my friend @_rabbitactual_. Surrounded by the energy of the convention and the iconic architecture of Bartle Hall, this session blended fandom, community, and cinematic storytelling.
ODST Halo Cosplay Photography at Planet Anime KC
@_rabbitactual_ stepped fully into character wearing her ODST Halo kit, complete with weathered armor details and a strong, tactical silhouette. The contrast between the gritty ODST aesthetic and the bright, open convention space created striking visuals that felt straight out of the Halo universe.
We captured a mix of:
-
Close-up armor and detail shots
-
Strong, action-driven poses
-
Wide cinematic frames using Bartle Hall as a backdrop

405th Longsword Division Collaboration
One of the standout elements of this shoot was the large rifle prop, generously loaned by companions in the 405th Longsword Division. Known throughout the Halo cosplay community for their craftsmanship and professionalism, the 405th helped complete the ODST loadout and elevate the realism of the session.
The rifle added weight, balance, and authenticity—transforming each image into a cinematic moment rather than a standard convention photo.
Cosplay Photography in Kansas City
Photographing cosplay at conventions like Planet Anime KC is about more than costumes. It’s about:
-
Community collaboration
-
Trust between photographer and cosplayer
-
Capturing presence, confidence, and character
Despite crowds and constant movement, Planet Anime KC offered endless opportunities for dramatic light, clean lines, and dynamic storytelling.
Camera & Settings Used for This Halo ODST Cosplay Session
For this Halo ODST cosplay photoshoot at Planet Anime KC, I photographed the session using a setup that balanced sharp detail with flexibility in a fast-moving convention environment.
Camera Body:
Canon EOS 5D Mark IV
Lens:
Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM
Image Details:
-
Resolution: 3919 × 5879 px
-
File Type: CR2 (RAW)
Exposure Settings:
-
Focal Length: 35mm
-
Shutter Speed: 1/100 sec
-
Aperture: f/5.0
-
ISO: 100
Why These Settings Worked
Shooting at 35mm allowed me to capture both the ODST armor details and the scale of Bartle Hall without distortion. An aperture of f/5.0 kept the armor sharp from edge to edge while still separating the subject from the busy convention background. Keeping ISO at 100 ensured clean files with maximum detail, perfect for cinematic cosplay edits.
This setup is ideal for convention cosplay photography, where lighting can shift quickly and subjects are constantly moving.
Final Thoughts
This Halo ODST cosplay photoshoot with @rabbitactual, supported by the 405th Longsword Division, is a perfect example of why convention cosplay photography is one of my favorite things to shoot in Kansas City.
