Katie’s Studio Maternity Session: One More Little Boy on the Way
A cozy, real-life maternity session with Dad + two energetic boys in the studio.
There’s something extra special about photographing maternity sessions for friends—because you already know the love, the laughter, and the little quirks that make a family them. Katie came into my studio with her husband and their two boys to celebrate a season that feels both familiar and brand new: they’ve got another baby boy on the way, and the excitement is already filling the room.
Studio maternity photos are one of my favorite ways to tell a family’s story because we can keep it simple, clean, and focused: connection first, details second, and plenty of room for movement (because… kids). We leaned into warm, timeless posing, a few softly lit portraits, and those in-between moments that always end up being the most meaningful.
Why I Love Studio Maternity Sessions for Families
In-studio sessions are perfect when you want:
- Comfort + consistency (no weather worries, no harsh sunlight surprises)
- Simple backgrounds that keep the focus on connection
- Controlled lighting for soft, flattering portraits
- Space for kids to be kids—with gentle direction and lots of patience
With maternity photos, I’m always aiming for a balance of “editorial” and “real.” Beautiful portraits you’d frame forever… and also the story of what it actually felt like to be in this season.
The Sweetest Detail: Big Brother Had Other Plans
The oldest was definitely in that “I’m here, but I’m not here” phase—and honestly? It was adorable. He was far more interested in hanging out and playing with my daughter than he was in posing for the camera.
And you know what? That’s real life. That’s family. Instead of forcing stiff smiles, we worked around his attention span, captured quick connection moments, and let the session breathe. Some of my favorite images come from those natural rhythms—when everyone relaxes and the pressure disappears.
My Approach When Kids Have Big Feelings (or Big Wiggles)
If you’re bringing little ones to your maternity session, here’s what I build into every shoot:
- Short, easy prompts instead of long pose lists
- Movement-based moments (snuggles, hugs, kisses, walking, “family squeeze”)
- Breaks when needed—because regulation comes before perfection
- Zero pressure to perform (kids don’t “ruin” photos—they make them honest)
The goal isn’t perfection. The goal is a gallery that feels like you.
Celebrating Baby #3 (Boy Edition!)
This session was a celebration of what’s already here—two sweet boys, a strong partnership, and a mama about to step into a brand new chapter. And now they’re adding one more little boy to the mix.
Katie, I’m so grateful you trusted me with this season. I can’t wait to watch your family grow—and I’m already picturing the “three boys” energy in the next round of photos.
