The First Metamorphic Session — Chapter 1: A Body in Motion
Our bodies change throughout our lives, sometimes in quiet ways and sometimes in ways that are deeply visible.
Weight shifts.
Strength builds.
Muscle develops where softness once lived.
Habits change.
Energy changes.
For many people who are actively working on their health, there is a period where the body is in motion — not who it once was, but not yet settled into its next version either.
Recently I had the privilege of photographing the first Chapter 1 Metamorphic Session for a client navigating both weight loss and muscle development. It marked the beginning of a body of work I’ve been holding space for called Metamorphic Sessions.
These sessions are not about dramatic transformation photos or “before and after” comparisons. They are about witnessing a body exactly where it is right now.
Beginning Without a Camera
As with every Metamorphic Session, we didn’t start with photography.
We started with conversation and presence.
Bodies that are changing — especially through weight loss or strength training — often carry a mix of pride, determination, and adjustment. Muscles feel different. Posture changes. The body can feel stronger while still learning how to exist in its new shape.
Taking time to sit, breathe, and talk before photographing helps the nervous system settle and allows the person in front of the camera to reconnect with their body before being asked to be seen.
Only after that moment of grounding did we begin photographing.
Chapter 1: Shedding
The first chapter of Metamorphic work is called Shedding.
It’s the stage where someone begins to release expectations about what their body “should” look like and instead meets the body that exists today.
For someone moving through weight loss and muscle building, this stage can be especially powerful.
Old habits, old self-perceptions, and even old ways of standing or moving begin to change. The body becomes something that is actively evolving.
During this session we focused on simple, grounded poses — sitting, breathing, resting into the space — allowing strength and softness to exist together without forcing performance.
The goal was not to show progress.
The goal was to honor the moment.
Photographing Strength in Transition
One of the most meaningful parts of the session came when my client realized he didn’t have to perform confidence.
He didn’t have to prove progress.
He didn’t have to pose in a way that exaggerated strength or hid parts of his body.
His body — with its developing muscle, shifting shape, and growing strength — could simply exist in front of the camera.
There’s something powerful about documenting a body while it’s still becoming.
Not at the finish line.
Not after the transformation.
But right in the middle of the work.
The Purpose of Metamorphic Sessions
Metamorphic Sessions are built around the idea of chapters rather than transformations.
Each session marks a point in someone’s journey — physical, emotional, or personal.
Sometimes people return months later to document the next chapter of their life. Sometimes one chapter is enough to mark a moment that mattered.
Either way, the photographs become a record of a body that was alive, working, changing, and present.
A Beginning
This first session was a quiet but meaningful start.
It was a reminder that photography doesn’t always need to celebrate the finish line. Sometimes the most honest images come from the middle of the journey — when the body is still learning what it’s capable of.
I’m deeply grateful to the people who trust me enough to step into this work. And I’m looking forward to seeing how the next chapters unfold.
